Chronic
prostatitis and benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH or enlarged prostate) will usually respond
well
to homeopathy and naturopathic treatment, in the experience of this
Perth clinic. Prostate problems are often complicated by
antibiotic suppression of more
trivial infections of the urogenital tract such as urethritis.
Urethritis itself is easily treatable by homeopathy. When male patients
present for treatment of chronic urogenital or prostate issues they
have usually
had long suppression of their symptoms by medication without full
resolution of the condition.
This makes the homeopath’s job a little harder, as we depend on the
subtle and complete symptom picture of the condition to prescribe the
most accurate medicine: the colour, amount and consistency of the
discharge, the nature of any pain and whether it occurs before, during,
at the end or after urination.
We may have to depend on the description of symptoms as they existed
before antibiotic use. However there are good broad-spectrum
homeopathic remedies that often enable the patients to come off
antibiotics safely. As always, we treat the constitution,
which means the whole health of the individual. Together with this we
also use remedies to counteract the suppression of the immune system by
drugs. Then as the picture becomes clearer we may use more specific
remedies to accurately target the acute symptom picture, with remedies
like Sabal serrulata (pictured above), Sarsaparilla, Petroselinum, Cantharis and others, depending on the exact symptom picture.
Please note, however, that this clinic requires that men presenting
with prostate problems are medically diagnosed first, because of the
symptom similarity between benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostate
cancer.
To treat the underlying tendency we may use what we call anti-miasmic remedies like Thuja, Medorrhinum and Sycotic-co,
depending on their indications. It is the skilful combination of acute
treatment combined with specific antidotes to the effects of drugs,
together with the constitutional remedy and the anti-miasmic medicines
that make it relatively easy to treat urethritis and prostatitis with
homeopathy, in our experience.
Naturopathic principles, a healthy lifestyle and diet are also
important in the treatment of prostate problems, especially benign
prostatic hypertrophy. Adequate zinc is important in the diet. A
supplement may be necessary, but a traditional food medicine in the
form of pumpkin seeds or pepitas has been found specifically useful in
the management of prostate issues. It is rich in zinc, but it also has
other prostate-specific beneficial nutrients, as does pomegranate and
berries such as blueberries. The addition of bee pollen in the
diet also appears to help.
There are many medicines useful in the management of benign prostatic hypertrophy, including Chimaphilla (illustrated above), Sabal, Pulsatilla and Conium maculatum (illustrated below).
They will only be useful when prescribed to their exact indications and
combined with constitutional homeopathic treatment. Also, weekly
prostate massage helps, and pelvic contraction exercises like the kegel
exercises recommended for women after childbirth can have a dramatic
effect, in my experience, but only if practised diligently for a month
or so. Many of the same medicines and treatments also aid the effect of
conventional treatment for the early stages of prostate cancer and help
to keep PSA levels down.
Problems
with sexual libido in men as well as women can respond to homeopathy.
It takes a little time, as constitutional medicines may need time to
work to restore full health and vitality. Often general energy and
wellbeing is restored in a matter of days, but the full effect on the
hormonal response of the body can take a few months.
The same is true for impotence, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. There
are certain homeopathic medicines that can aid directly
here; but my experience is that they need to be given together with
constitutional treatment (for the person as a whole)and combined
with a healthy diet and stress management. Pelvic contraction
exercises also help. I find that “Om kara kriya” tantric yoga exercises that I
teach are especially useful. Weight bearing exercise is also very
important.
Of course, if the problem is simply due to “performance
anxiety” the response to the indicated remedy can be far swifter, as
mental and emotional problems respond more quickly than deep-seated
physical complaints.
